Accomplishments

Some of CLDC's accomplishments:

  • Fought against the Green Scare — the government's unconstitutional attack on environmental and animal rights activists — by conducting research, participating in public outreach and education, and assisting with the legal defense of non-cooperating defendants. Also provided attorney referrals for various individuals and assisted their attorneys with various legal issues.

  • Represented over 80 environmental, animal and social rights nonviolent civil disobedience protestors in 2006.

  • Secured the right of Oregon prisoners to practice the Rastafarian religion by allowing them to wear dreadlocks while incarcerated.

  • Representation of a Portland–area Mosque in a successful block of the FBI's first–ever attempt to subpoena religious records.

  • Successful representation of local activist Perry Patterson a mother of two draft-age sons who was arrested for shouting No! at a Cheney rally after the Vice–President stated that an escalation in the war in Iraq was necessary.

  • Successful constitutional challenge of the relatively new Oregon statute, "Interference with Agricultural Operations," which has been used by local law enforcement to strip community forest activists of their freedoms of free speech and association.

  • Provided several Freedom of Information Act trainings.

  • Maintained a political prison support program.

  • Worked on USA PATRIOT act tracking and outreach program.

  • Worked on AETA (Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act) tracking and outreach program. Will assist with litigation when appropriate. Participate in a national group of attorneys strategizing against repressive legislation.

  • Provided free legal representation to over 35 people arrested for civil disobedience–30 were acquitted.

  • Produced and distributed "Know Your Rights" outreach material, as well as presenting over 150 "Know Your Rights" trainings

  • Conducted over 50 grand jury trainings that teach people their rights when subpoenaed.
