We provide litigation, education, and legal and strategic resources to strengthen and embolden the success of those movements. Our motto is \u201cWe\u2019ve got your back until all are free.\u201d We have provided pro bono activist defense to at least 6,000 social, environmental, and climate justice activists, as well as providing free Know Your Rights &amp; Risks trainings to more than 12,500 people and organizations. CLDC\u2019s staff attorneys have extensive movement litigation experience as well as experience with intersectional movement organizing work. Please see our <a href=\"https:\/\/cldc.org\/\">website<\/a> for more information about our work, cases, and the other movement legal support we provide.<\/p>\n<h4>Summary:<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you want to work full-time on cutting-edge left-political cases? In response to the authoritarian attacks on political dissent, CLDC is currently seeking a movement attorney with a minimum of three years of litigating experience with plaintiffs\u2019 civil rights, criminal, and\/or civil \u201clawfare\u201d defense (politicized lawsuits and legal attacks brought by far right or corporate entities and state and federal governments). Our ideal candidate will have a strong environmental and\/or social justice background as well as good connections to active movement groups nationwide. Federal litigation experience is required. CLDC work will include complex criminal defense, activist\/organization grand jury witness representation, and quashing subpoenas and other SLAPP and lawfare-related cases. We are looking for a well-rounded movement attorney who brings hard work, initiative, commitment, and passion for our work, our clients, and the progressive movements we support and defend. We are looking for strong trial skills, someone willing to quickly learn novel areas of the law, and the ability to work well with diverse teams of activists, lawyers, and legal workers and relate to the movements we work with. In addition, the movement attorney will contribute to our Dissent &amp; Democracy program by developing and presenting our public education trainings (Know Your Rights &amp; Risks).<\/p>\n<h4>Movement Defense Responsibilities:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Federal and state felony and misdemeanor criminal defense litigation &#8212; from client intake through post-trial motions, appeals, and political prisoner legal support.<\/li>\n<li>Defend targets of federal SLAPP &amp; \u201cLawfare\u201d cases \u2014 often with fast deadlines, novel legal issues, and aggressive opposing counsel.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to bring in progressive activist clients and legal work in line with our mission.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work on cases <em>pro hac vice<\/em> (our cases are in state and federal courts around the country), learning and applying a variety of laws and court rules.<\/li>\n<li>Work collaboratively with legal teams and defendant groups to foster movement lawyering, litigation strategy, and movement-building.<\/li>\n<li>Provide CLDC Know Your Rights and Risks (KYRR) and related movement trainings, workshops, and public presentations within the first 90 days on the job.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to effectively communicate complex messages with diverse audiences through large group public speaking as well as small group and one-on-one consultations.<\/li>\n<li>Partner with the communications team to contribute to storytelling, narrative, and outreach work.<\/li>\n<li>Engage in coalition and movement collaboration meetings.<\/li>\n<li>Enthusiastically represent CLDC\u2019s purpose and values as an external and internal leader.<\/li>\n<li>At least a two-year commitment is requested.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h4>Minimum Experience and Qualifications:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>3 years minimum experience as an attorney handling criminal defense, SLAPP\/\u201dlawfare,\u201d and\/or federal civil rights plaintiffs\u2019 cases.<\/li>\n<li>Admitted to practice law in good standing (ideally at least one federal bar admission at the time of application).<\/li>\n<li>Jury trial experience and skills.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to meet deadlines.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to perform a variety of tasks independently while maintaining attention to detail.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated commitment to environmental and\/or social justice movement(s), broadly defined.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated skill in dealing with diversity of movements, and culturally appropriate, anti-racist, anti-oppression orientation.<\/li>\n<li>Must be available and able to travel several days per year via airplane and\/or car, including overnights, throughout the continental United States.<\/li>\n<li>Available for some evening and weekend work activities.<\/li>\n<li>Physical capabilities: Able to work at a computer consistently for at least eight hours a day (with appropriate breaks), 40 hours per week. Some lifting may be required (e.g. carrying luggage, computers, resources for audiences, etc., up to 50 pounds on occasion).<\/li>\n<li>Remote workers must be present in Eugene, Oregon, on a quarterly basis.
