The government’s increasingly blatant disregard for constitutional protections —particularly those guaranteed under the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 14th Amendments — has laid bare a truth many have long known: we are only one administration away from full-blown authoritarianism.

Over the past week, CNN and other mainstream outlets have been preoccupied with debating whether the recent protests in Los Angeles, sparked by brutal militarized ICE raids, represent a legitimate grassroots movement—or (cue ominous music and tired dog whistles) whether they’re the work of “outside agitators,” “professional instigators,” or “roaming bands of anarchists.”

This narrative isn’t new. For generations, terms like “outside agitators,” “communists,” “socialists,” and “anarchists” have been trotted out to delegitimize resistance. When people rise up, risking injury and arrest to push back against illegitimate and illegal power, the media and state scramble to rationalize it. The response? Label them radicals, destabilizers, threats – anything but human beings demanding dignity and justice and the protections they’re supposed to be provided by our Constitution.

We live in an era where nuance and curiosity have been replaced with inflammatory labels and fear-driven messaging and misinformation designed to maintain the status quo — keeping the public scared and the money flowing to billionaires. Ask someone in a position of institutional power what an anarchist believes, and you’ll likely hear a cartoonish caricature, detached from any serious understanding of anarchist thought or practice.

We push back against this ignorance by supporting anarchist prisoners — not only by providing no cost movement aligned legal representation, but also amplifying their voices from within prison walls, and offering emotional and material support during and after their incarceration.

Civil Liberties Defense Center (CLDC) is proud to stand in solidarity with these individuals on June 11th and every day that follows.
