Reconstruction to Modern Streets: The Black Unity Victory and the True Meaning of Juneteenth<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As we approach Juneteenth\u2014a holiday honoring the ongoing struggle toward Black liberation and the realization of civil rights\u2014we are reflecting on a major milestone in our ongoing fight for local justice. In 2020, activists filed Black Unity, et al. v. City of Springfield, et al.<\/em> following a peaceful march protesting a noose displayed outside a Black resident’s home, where marchers were met with outrageous retaliation and excessive force by local police. Recently, a federal judge delivered a monumental victory by denying the city’s motions to dismiss, issuing a scathing 100-page opinion ruling that all claims will proceed to trial. Crucially, the judge supported claims under the Reconstruction-era Ku Klux Klan Act\u2014a law passed in the late 1800\u2019s to protect newly emancipated citizens from white supremacist violence\u2014underlining how deeply the past connects to our modern struggle for safety and free speech.<\/p>\n

This historic ruling has finally forced the defendants to the table, and they have agreed to sit down with us in late June in an attempt to settle the case. The fact that a Reconstruction-era statute is still required to protect Black protesters in Oregon reminds us that the promise of Juneteenth is a continuous, active pursuit. Whether through a meaningful settlement or at trial, we enter these late-June negotiations carrying the spirit of all those who have fought and continue to fight for liberation, determined to turn the promise of equal rights into a reality for our community.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
