Our Executive Director and senior staff attorney, Lauren Regan, has just received the great honor of winning the Kerry Rydberg Award for Excellence in Public Interest Environmental Law for her outstanding legal work at Standing Rock! Lauren has worked tirelessly to provide legal support at Standing Rock, including countless hours of background work doing research, writing, meetings, and conference calls from home, as well as multiple week long trips across the country to Standing Rock to act as a legal observer on the scene, provide or organize know your rights and cybersecurity trainings, appear in state and federal criminal and civil courts on behalf of water protectors, meet with clients, and help organize with other lawyers and legal workers.
Tens of thousands of viewers have watched Lauren’s Standing Rock YouTube interview with the Young Turks (“BRAVE Environmental Lawyer Explains Standing Rock Legal Issues”), thousands have attended her Standing Rock trainings, and hundreds of water protectors are receiving legal representation or support in some form from her. Lauren’s work to support Standing Rock has been, and continues to be, a truly heroic effort.
The immense amount of work that Lauren has poured into Standing Rock has not gone unnoticed. Lauren will receive the Kerry Rydberg Award in a public presentation during the annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference this year in Eugene, Oregon in March. Lauren shares the award this year with Julia Olson of Our Children’s Trust and Joe Lovett of Appalachian Mountain Advocates.
