ALEC is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 “nonprofit” organization that works to promote corporate interests in public policy and espouses principles of free markets, limited government, and federalism . Based in Washington D.C., ALEC is primarily a membership organization composed of hundreds of state legislators, and representatives of large corporations such as ExxonMobil, Koch Industries, and Peabody Energy.

Legal Observing is an exciting way to play an important role in any demonstration or protest. Legal Observers are individuals who purposely position themselves close enough to demonstrations to be able to accurately watch and report the activities of participants and the law enforcement who interact with them.

Know Your Rights training are our most regular and widely held educational events. Each workshop is tailored to the needs of the particular group of participants. Armed with knowledge, activists and others can make informed choices regarding their interactions with government agents and can best protect their rights should they end up in handcuffs and in the legal system.

This week CLDC launched two, one hour Know-Your-Rights training videos. The first is our most well-known, offering basic legal information for activists so they might be informed when interacting with law enforcement officials during protests. The second explains basic rights for immigrant communities and their allies, and is in both English and Spanish languages.

This one hour educational video explains basic rights for immigrant communities and their allies. The purpose of this training is to build solidarity with communities at risk for police and government harassment and to prevent the deportation and destruction of families and communities. This video is not intended as legal advice and does not form an attorney-client relationship. The training is provided in English and Spanish.
