This event will feature an exclusive sneak preview of a documentary film currently in production featuring the legal work of CLDC founder Lauren Regan and activists in Oregon fighting fossil fuel infrastructure and transport. The film offers an urgent assessment of the immense threats to the planet that are now inescapable with fires engulfing much of the Pacific. But it also tells a powerful story of grit, determination, and creative possibilities as communities come together in a larger fight to save the planet.

Lauren Regan is founder of the Civil Liberties Defense Center, and currently its Executive Director and senior staff attorney.

Stephanie Tidwell is Deputy Director of the Civil Liberties Defense Center, and a former Executive Director of the Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center.

Cathy Sampson-Kruse is an elder of the Waluulapum Band, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, and a member of the CLDC advisory board

Haunani Kalama is founder of Kulama, a strategy & development consultancy, and Associate Producer, "Necessity”

Jan Haaken, Director of "Necessity," is professor emeritus of psychology at Portland State University, a clinical psychologist, and documentary filmmaker.

A SÉRIE

A série "Necessity" educa e inspira os espectadores ao acompanhar seus personagens em uma jornada desafiadora por terras e vias aquáticas contestadas. Enquanto os estados intensificam as acusações criminais por interferência na infraestrutura de combustíveis fósseis, ativistas argumentam que os poluidores são os verdadeiros criminosos, razão pela qual eles cada vez mais vão às ruas e aos tribunais em busca de justiça. Cada parte de 55 minutos da série é estruturada em torno de cenários – lugares, personagens e ações onde o drama se concentra em táticas de resistência, desde petições e protestos em audiências, bloqueios em bancos ou canteiros de obras de dutos, até a interferência no transporte real de petróleo. Cada parte explica uma forma de combustível fóssil e indaga sobre seu transporte, apresentando líderes indígenas, tratados e alianças comunitárias em lutas contra diferentes formas de combustível fóssil – o que um cientista descreve como “sabores do mesmo veneno”. A Parte I (em festivais e campanha de impacto) acompanha a resistência ao petróleo de areia betuminosa canadense e aos dutos no Centro-Oeste, e a Parte II (em pós-produção) foca em cidades ao longo do Rio Columbia, no Oregon, lutando contra o transporte de petróleo por trem.
