أنيتا كاميرون is a disability justice activist who has been involved in social change activism and community organizing for 43 years.

Anita has been arrested 140 times for nonviolent civil disobedience fighting for civil rights and justice for all disabled folks. She was invited to the White House on three occasions, has met three sitting U.S. Presidents, two Vice-Presidents, and helped to organize a national march. Anita received the 2023 Corey Rowley National Advocacy Award from the National Council on Independent Living for their work in systems change advocacy and activism.

Anita wrote a children’s book for the My Itty Bitty Bio series about their participation in the historic Capitol Crawl, in the fight for the ADA. Anita’s Project, We Were There, Too: Blacks in the Disability Movement, was one of 10 Black disability justice organizations and projects to receive funding from Borealis Philanthropy’s Black Disabled Liberation Project.

Aviance’s passion for truth-telling led her to become a zealous advocate for civil rights. As a movement lawyer, Aviance has advocated for systemic criminal justice and prison reform. She has done extensive research on the ways in which the criminal legal system preys on communities of color by issuing punitive, excessive and arbitrary court fines and fees both pre and post-conviction. Aviance also represents protesters whose rights have been violated by law enforcement, including those with disabilities in need of accommodations under the American's with Disabilities Act.

She has represented clients at the trial and appellate level advocating for the protection of voting rights for communities of color. As an adjunct law professor, Aviance trains future lawyers on the intersection of race and the criminal legal system and implores her students to imagine a true justice system through restorative justice.
