WHY: For the past ten years, CLDC has defended THE civil liberties of activists by providing pro-bono legal representation and trainings for scores of people working to defend the earth and social justice, often on the frontlines of the movement.

Emboldened by a sense of duty in an era of politically turbulent times, the Eugene-based civil liberties group has provided free legal representation to more than 800 activist clients in the past decade. With a lean staff and unwavering dedication to justice, CLDC vigorously challenges police misconduct and other constitutional violations, including the right to assemble and speak your mind.

This year, CLDC’s staff attorney, Lauren Regan, has taken a leadership role in providing top-notch activist defense to those on the frontlines fighting Tar Sands in Texas, of whom most were arrested while blockading the construction of TransCanada’s Keystone XL Pipeline. In Oregon this year CLDC’s work includes filing a Federal civil rights lawsuit intended to defend the constitutional right to protest without curfews and without government permission on traditional public forums, like the Federal Plaza and Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza, both in Eugene. Also in 2013, CLDC advocated for the Cascadia Forest Defenders at the Oregon State Capital and filed litigation to advance human rights for un-housed people.
